John L. Cohn – Managing Director

john-cohn

John’s work experience is unusually broad and deep; he was raised in the Department Store world in a family business, worked at a Fortune 500 company, built his own import and export firms and created his own consultancy. That gives him a few decades of experience across a range of businesses that he can bring every day to investment banking clients.  Throughout the journey acquisitions and divestitures have been part of the strategy and negotiating has been a key skill. John has been President of Independent Retailers Syndicate, Chief Operating Officer at the Doneger Group, Head of M&A at Wolf Popper, Inc. and President of Growth Resources Group – a business development advisory focused strategies management and capital raising.

He has been an advisor to scores of leading retail companies worldwide including such prominent names as: Wal-Mart, Hess’s, Mervyns, House of Fraser, Galleries Lafayette, Myers Grace, Lane Crawford and El Palacio de Hierro.  But John’s entrepreneurial side led him to act as a strategic and financial advisor to small and medium size businesses in fields from Media and Publishing, Consumer Goods, Food and Internet Retailing to Healthcare and Business Services.

For over a decade John was a director at Extebank (now Capital One) and served on the audit and investment committees. He has been a guest lecturer in Entrepreneurial Studies at Columbia and has volunteered at several other local colleges. He was educated at Brown University and the Stern School of Business. Giving back is important to John which he does as a member of several Westchester executive groups, including the Westchester County Association where he serves on the Economic Development Task Force and as a Partner in the Accelerator Network. He is a Founding Member of the Hudson Valley Startup Fund, targeted at developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem across the Lower and Mid-Hudson Valley.

John is a music lover, an active golfer and an ardent college basketball fan. He enjoys trap and skeet, is a Lifetime Member of the Sierra Club, a longtime supporter of the New York Botanical Garden and the Metropolitan Museum and is a not too serious photographer.

He has Series 79 and 63 Securities Licenses.
